Erika D. Sears, MD, MS, serves as a faculty member in the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System.
Dr. Sears received her Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan Medical School. She completed the Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency and Hand Surgery Fellowship at the University of Michigan. She also received additional research training in health services research as a fellow of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program, where she earned a Masters of Science from the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School.
Clinical Specialization:
Dr. Sears specializes in hand surgery (including treatment of upper extremity trauma, hand and wrist arthritis, nerve injury and compression, Dupuytren contracture, joint contracture, and hand tumors among other hand disorders) and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Research Overview
Dr. Sears has interest in the study of value and efficiency of surgical care. She has received grant funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs to assess surgical delay and resource use to improve the value of pre-surgical care. Dr. Sears has continued interest in evaluating the quality of surgical care across patients’ full surgical episode, with an understanding of the impact of healthcare setting and care fragmentation on surgical care value.
