Breastfeeding Support
Breastfeeding Support
Breastfeeding is more than a lifestyle choice, it’s an important health decision that provides lifelong benefits for both you and your baby. At University of Michigan Health, our staff of physicians, certified lactation consultants, and registered nurses are committed to providing your family with education, encouragement and support to help you meet your breastfeeding goals.
For non-urgent breastfeeding questions, please call our Lactation Warm Line at 844-200-8894. You will be asked to leave a message and one of our lactation consultants will return your call within 24 hours. If you have concerns about your infant that need immediate attention, please contact your child's pediatrician or other primary care provider.
Inpatient Support
Breastfeeding is natural, but it is also a skill that requires learning and practice. Following the birth of your baby, your nurse will provide the assistance you need while you and your baby work together as a team to develop a breastfeeding partnership.
You will learn how to watch for hunger cues, how to position your baby to help them latch effectively and how to tell if your baby is getting enough to eat. If you and your baby are separated temporarily after birth due to health issues, your nurse will help you establish a milk supply using a breast pump.
In addition to your nurse, a team of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) is available to oversee and assist with more complex breastfeeding concerns.
After your hospital stay, our team of IBCLCs is available to provide additional support. You can call the Lactation Warm Line at 844-200-8894 to speak with an IBCLC or you can call 734-763-6295 to schedule an appointment to meet with an IBCLC in person at one of our outpatient breastfeeding clinics.
