Fragile X Syndrome Multi-Disciplinary Clinic
Fragile X Syndrome Multi-Disciplinary Clinic
University of Michigan Health offers a monthly clinic dedicated to children and adults with Fragile X syndrome. The clinic provides multidisciplinary care with care providers from Genetics and Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics.
Our Approach
Patients will meet with a geneticist and genetic counselor to receive specialized genetic counseling and medical management for Fragile X syndrome. Pediatric patients will meet with Dr. Lauren O’Connell, Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician.
Together, our clinic aims to provide comprehensive medical management for children and adults with Fragile X syndrome, as well as information about ongoing research and clinical trials. Referrals to additional subspecialists with clinical experience in Fragile X syndrome can be coordinated as needed.
Who We Treat
Our clinic provides comprehensive care for children and adults with Fragile X syndrome. We provide services for those who are newly diagnosed, as well as ongoing medical management for patients who have an established diagnosis of Fragile X syndrome.
Our Services
Patients will meet with Dr. Christina Sloan-Heggen, geneticist specializing in Fragile X syndrome, as well as Jessica O’Shea, pediatric genetic counselor and clinic coordinator. Our genetics team will provide comprehensive management for the medical concerns associated with Fragile X syndrome. We will provide genetic counseling focused on identifying other family members who may be affected by Fragile X syndrome, Fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency, and Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome.
Pediatric patients will meet with Dr. Lauren O’Connell, Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician, who provides assessment and treatment of behavioral conditions commonly impacting children with Fragile X syndrome.
For patients with Fragile X premutation associated conditions such as Fragile X-associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome, a referral can be sent to Dr. Peter Todd in the multidisciplinary Ataxia Clinic.
