Family Medicine Pregnancy & Childbirth Care
Family Medicine Pregnancy & Childbirth Care
At University of Michigan Health, our nationally-recognized physicians provide you with a full spectrum of care, including pregnancy and childbirth care. Our physicians can care for you throughout your pregnancy and delivery, including caring for your newborn in the hospital. After your baby’s birth, the same doctor can continue to care for you, your new baby and other family members, serving as a care provider for your whole family.
This continuity of care means you’ll have a physician who is familiar with your total health picture and knows you and your family as people, not just patients. It also offers the convenience of allowing both you and your baby to be seen together by one physician for post-natal and newborn care.

Our Approach
Our Family Medicine physicians work collaboratively with the full hospital childbirth team and have access to all the advanced technology and capabilities offered by U-M Health, Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital and Mott Children’s Hospital. When you come to the hospital to deliver, you are cared for by the same integrated nursing team that provides care for all of our childbirth patients, including midwife and OBGYN patients. Whenever possible, your personal Family Medicine physician will be notified upon your admission to the hospital for labor and will attend your delivery.
Should high-risk pregnancy care be required, your family medicine physician will work hand-in-hand with our maternal-fetal medicine specialists to provide care unparalleled by any other center in the region. Some of the most common high-risk conditions, including maternal age over 35, maternal depression, gestational hypertension and maternal obesity, are managed by family physicians in close communication with maternal-fetal medicine specialists. Once your baby is born, we also offer ready access to pediatric specialty services at Mott Children’s Hospital, if needed.
Our Family Physicians are trained to care for patients from birth and throughout their life, providing complete, thorough, and compassionate care, based on the best available evidence, to family members of all ages. Many of our physicians care for several generations of family members.
