Japanese Family Medicine Zoom Pregnancy Group
Japanese Family Medicine Zoom Pregnancy Group
The Japanese Family Health Program offers prenatal classes in Japanese through small Zoom groups for expectant mothers. Each session lasts about two hours and is held once a month. Groups include women who are at a similar stage of pregnancy, giving participants the opportunity to learn together, share experiences, and connect with one another. All sessions are conducted in Japanese and include discussion of how pregnancy care in the U.S. may differ from Japan.
About the Sessions
Group prenatal care is used across the United States and is known to improve education and support for patients. The University of Michigan Health was the first to offer this type of care in Japanese, starting in 2010. These sessions were originally held alongside in-person checkups, but since 2020 they have been offered on Zoom.
Participants gain a better understanding of pregnancy and childbirth, build confidence in managing their health, and often feel more satisfied with their care. Many questions and concerns are shared among participants, and learning together can be even more helpful than one-on-one visits alone. Because the program combines education with prenatal care, it may reduce the number of clinic visits and help lower costs. It also creates a strong sense of community and support among participants.
