Physical Therapy & Physical Therapy Assistant Student Clinical Rotations

MedSport provides rewarding clinical learning experiences for students enrolled in accredited academic physical therapy and physical therapy assistant programs. Senior clinical learning experiences preferred. Students will be assigned to credentialed clinical instructors passionate about teaching between four MedSport clinic locations:

About the Program

Students will be assigned to a MedSport clinical instructor who will lead the clinical education experience in sports and orthopedic rehabilitation. The student will meet behavioral objectives established by the school and MedSport to successfully complete the experience. We individualize the teaching and setting to help the learner develop clinical competency skills. MedSport clinical rotations are recommended as a final clinical education experience before graduation.

Our clinical teaching program includes:

  • 1 on 1 Clinical Mentoring
  • Monthly Staff Inservice, Journal Club and Lab based learning opportunities
  • Access to MedSport hosted continuing education courses
  • Learning opportunities in sub-specialty practice areas
  • Access to weekly PT residency learning opportunities

To participate in a clinical rotation with MedSport your school must be affiliated with Michigan Health and have a current Master agreement on file.  Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education must contact MedSport Site Coordinator of Clinical Education to establish contracts.

Requirements for students

Students must comply with the institutional policies and procedures for:

  • Immunizations and TB testing*
  • Background testing and drug screening*
  • Completion of job application
  • Hospital Competency Modules* (during orientation)

*All information and paperwork will be shared 6-8 weeks prior to start date by MedSport PT/PTA SCCE

MedSport Athletic Training Student Experiences

MedSport participates in the education of athletic training students, as part of their individual program requirements, through clinical and high school rotations. Students work directly with a certified athletic trainer to gain further knowledge, skills, and hands on training as part of their education while following department and CAATE standards.

MedSport Clinic Locations:

Students will be assigned to a MedSport Athletic Trainer who will serve as their preceptor for a clinical education experience in sports and orthopedic rehabilitation or in the outreach setting at one of our affiliated high schools.  We individualize the teaching and setting to help the learner develop competency skills.   

What to Expect

Our clinical teaching program includes: 

  • 1 on 1 Clinical Mentoring
  • Monthly Staff Inservice, Journal Club and Lab based learning opportunities.
  • Access to MedSport hosted continuing education courses.
  • Learning opportunities in sub-specialty practice areas. 

Our Outreach Program includes (with Preceptor supervision): 

  • Assess and/or development of current or new event emergency action plans
  • Coordination and management of on-site athletic training programs
  • Provide direct evaluation of athletic related injuries and illnesses
  • Design and implementation of injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation programs
  • Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Weight Monitoring Program
  • Access to our entire sports medicine staff and programs

To participate in a rotation with MedSport or one of our affiliated outreach high school programs, your school must be affiliated with Michigan Health and have a current Master agreement on file.

Student Observer Opportunities: The MedSport visiting observer program is intended for individuals with an interest in the field of physical therapy and athletic training in the area of sports medicine. The purpose of time with us is to become immersed in the daily workings of MedSport clinics, glean a better understanding of physical therapy and athletic training.  Students are permitted to observe for 20 hours maximum over a two week period.
