Frequently Asked Questions

The length of eye appointments can vary. Depending on your testing and specialty care needs, appointments can take 1-4 hours. Please plan ahead and  expect to have some wait time between the testing parts of your appointment.

You may want to bring a snack, a sweater (if you get cold easily), and something to do while you’re waiting.

You may want to bring a driver, in case your pupils need to be dilated or you need to have a procedure done as part of your eye appointment.

Checking in

We encourage you to complete eCheck-In, and please see our staff member at  the front desk when you arrive to make sure you’ve completed the full check-in process.

Clinic staff

Kellogg Eye Center is a teaching facility. Because of this, you may see trainees in different roles, such as medical students, residents, and  fellows throughout your appointment. An eye appointment has many steps, so you may also see technicians and photographers as well as your eye doctor.

Steps within your appointment

  • Before you see your doctor, you will see a technician who may give you eyedrops to dilate (widen) your pupils.

  • We may bring you to have some photos taken of your eyes.

  • You may see a trainee (medical student, resident, or fellow) for more  testing before you have your exam with your eye doctor.

  • Depending on your situation, your doctor may suggest having a  procedure done on the same day as your appointment.

Wait times

Waiting is a part of our appointment process, as we prepare you for different testing procedures. Our providers may also need to respond to  patient emergencies, which may cause short delays. Please expect to wait between each step of your appointment.

If you need to leave for any reason before seeing your doctor, please stop by checkout to let us know so we can reschedule your appointment if necessary, or share any information with you before you leave.

Call (734) 764-4190 or send us a message through the online patient portal (MyUofMHealth.org) for scheduling, non-urgent medical questions, paperwork, medication refills, etc.

For help with the online patient portal, call (734) 615-0872.

For urgent medical concerns, talk with your doctor or call 911 and go to the emergency room (ER).
