Multiple Sclerosis Center
Multiple Sclerosis Center
The Michigan Medicine Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Neuroimmunology Clinic in the Department of Neurology has highly skilled specialists who handle the most complex neuroimmunological conditions and their treatments, while prioritizing patient-centered care. Our team of fellowship-trained neuroimmunologists, who work together with other interdisciplinary specialists, provide the most cutting-edge and multidisciplinary management strategies to address each underlying condition and its symptoms.
Our Approach
The Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Neuroimmunology Clinic is classified as a Comprehensive Care Center by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – a designation that reflects the highest level of comprehensive and multidisciplinary care in MS.
Our center focuses on the prevention of new disease activity and disability progression, management of current symptoms and functional limitations, and promotion of wellness and healthy lifestyle factors. We prioritize identifying the most effective therapeutic approaches to target the underlying immune processes that cause MS and other autoimmune conditions of the central nervous system, while meeting patients where they are at in their course, considering their goals and tailoring treatment approaches to their specific needs. Conditions and syndromes that we evaluate and treat include:
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS)
- Radiologically Isolated Syndrome (RIS)
- Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO)
- Transverse Myelitis
- Optic Neuritis
- Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody-Associated Disease (MOGAD)
- Neurosarcoidosis
- Autoimmune Encephalitis
- CNS Vasculitis
Through interdisciplinary approaches, our team also prioritizes the treatment of chronic symptoms that affect wellbeing and quality of life. These include “invisible” symptoms that are often the most common and burdensome. Symptoms that we commonly manage include:
- Fatigue
- Sleep disturbances
- Chronic pain
- Cognitive issues
- Weakness
- Balance problems
- Visual disturbances
- Depression
- Pain
- Neurogenic bladder
Services
From a diagnostic perspective, our neuroimmunologists are trained to recognize what is MS, and what is not, applying the latest diagnostic approaches. Diagnostic services include the most updated imaging acquisition methods that conform to the latest standards in the field, facilitated by four MRI locations in Southeastern Michigan. Additional diagnostic services include Optical Coherence Tomography, and access to the latest laboratory testing services for blood and cerebrospinal fluid biomarker analyses.
From a therapeutic standpoint, all FDA-Approved MS Disease Modifying therapies are offered, from oral and injectable treatments to infusion-based therapies. Infusion treatments are offered at multiple Michigan Medicine Infusion Center locations and the home setting, while injectable and oral MS treatments, as well as symptomatic medications, are offered through Michigan Medicine’s Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy that includes knowledgeable pharmacists who provide educational services to our patients.
Michigan Medicine services also include a broad range of therapies and rehabilitative strategies to optimize function, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, and access to our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department specialists and psychologists, who work closely with our neuroimmunology team.

Research
Our interdisciplinary research program focuses on advancing multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuroimmunology discoveries through clinical trials and innovative analytical approaches. Details about the program can be found here:
Community Engagement
Our center also works closely with community partners including the Midwest chapter of the National MS Society to promote patient education and community outreach. We frequently include patient stakeholders in our research efforts, who contribute to the design and conduct of our studies to enhance patient-centeredness.
