Patient Rights to a Medical Interpreter
Medical interpreters at University of Michigan Health foster patient-centered care by delivering high quality, compassionate interpreting services in a timely and professional manner. Patients have the right to a professional medical interpreter 24/7, at no charge.
U-M Health provides trained professional medical interpreters for the patients who are Deaf, Deaf/Blind, or Hard of Hearing, or who are Limited English Proficient (LEP). Services are available, 24/7 in accordance with federal and state law and with regulatory requirements. We also provide over-the-phone interpretation services when in-person medical interpreters are unavailable.
Interpretation services are provided:

- Over-the-phone
- Via video
American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and other services for patients who are Deaf, Deaf/Blind, or Hard of Hearing are available free of charge, to ensure effective communication between staff, patients and patients’ families.
