Exercise Physiology for Cardiovascular Disease
Exercise Physiology for Cardiovascular Disease
If you have cardiac disease or are at risk for it, exercise can make a significant difference in your health. The Preventive Cardiology Program at U-M Health has specialized exercise physiologists, who understand the effect exercise has on cardiovascular disease, and use specific forms of exercise to reduce or reverse your individual issues.
Participation in our referral-based program begins with an exercise consultation, which is an individualized appointment with an exercise physiologist, who has a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree in exercise physiology, designed to assist you in developing an exercise program targeted to treat your specific condition.
Who We Treat
Exercise consultations are offered for individuals with:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- High cholesterol
- Obesity
- Family risk of heart disease
- Metabolic syndrome
Our Approach
During your exercise consultation, the exercise physiologist takes a medical history with an emphasis placed on your cardiovascular history. A detailed exercise history with preferences and current activities are discussed. A review of recent diagnostic testing is analyzed and used as a guideline for your exercise program. Together, you and the exercise physiologist discuss short-term and long-term goals in order to provide the most appropriate exercise program. Finally, a comprehensive cardiovascular exercise program is created for you.
Our Fitness Center is a state-of-the-art facility that is housed in the Preventive Cardiology clinic at Domino's Farms. The Fitness Center is medically supervised at all times by our team of exercise physiologists. It includes a wide variety of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment specifically designed to improve cardiovascular and physical functioning.
Working in a multidisciplinary environment, our exercise physiologists work in combination with our nutritionists and nurse practitioners, discussing patients’ needs and progress, so they can provide the very best coordinated care.
