Pediatric Psychology Clinic
Pediatric Psychology Clinic
When your child or teen is dealing with an acute or chronic medical condition, our Pediatric Psychologists at University of Michigan Health can help. Our psychologists are connected to your child’s U-M Health medical team - whether it’s at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital or your child’s U-M Health pediatrician’s office.
We collaborate with your child’s health care team for a patient and family-centered, holistic approach. We have an understanding of how illness impacts children and families, the challenges of navigating an acute or chronic condition, ways to promote health, and evidence-based interventions that are proven to help. We are also connected to the community where your family receives pediatric care and work alongside your child’s pediatrician to help with behaviors, mood, learning, and developmental concerns.
Our Pediatric Psychologists work in multiple settings, including subspecialty medical clinics, our outpatient Pediatric Psychology clinic, within your child’s U-M Health pediatrician’s office, and on the hospital floors of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Our psychologists provide care both in person and via telehealth, depending on the setting and concern.
Our Approach
Pediatric Psychologists used evidence-based (i.e., tested with research) approaches to assessment and treatment. Our approach is patient- and family-centered meaning that we involve your family in the process of identifying concerns and coming up with a plan that meets your child’s needs and is feasible for your family. We often gather information from your child’s medical team, school, and others to provide comprehensive and coordinated care.
For some children and teens, our treatments are brief as they are focused on specific problems. In other situations our psychologists will work with your child and family throughout the course of their treatment at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Our focus is providing behavioral health intervention where you receive care, whether at your pediatrician’s office or the children’s hospital.
Who We Treat
Our team provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for children and adolescents (and their families) who are facing challenges with their adjustment to a medical condition or its clinical management.
Our Pediatric Psychologists located at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital can help with the following concerns:
- Coping with a new medical diagnosis, illness or injury, chronic medical condition, or a change in health
- Adjusting to hospitalization
- Behaviors that are impacting health management
- Helping to improve lifestyle habits that improve health and well-being including medication taking and following other medical recommendations (i.e., nutrition, exercise) that are important for your child’s health
- Symptom management and coping when your child has physical symptoms (i.e., pain, fatigue) that are impacting their functioning
- Weight management
- Feeding concerns for newborn babies and medically complex youth
- Family or sibling adjustment to illness
Our Pediatric Psychologists who are integrated into your child’s U-M Health pediatrician’s office provide brief, patient-centered care that addresses both medical and behavioral health needs. Typically, services are time limited and focus on specific referral concerns including:
- Behavior management
- ADHD
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Learning and behavior at school
- Toileting
- Sleep issues
- Picky eating
- Tics and habits
- Family conflicts
- Other related concerns
Our team performs testing for ADHD and screens for developmental concerns (e.g., Autism). This approach promotes timely access to care when concerns arise with minimal interference in children’s school and family routines.
