Interdisciplinary Pediatric Feeding Program
Interdisciplinary Pediatric Feeding Program
The Interdisciplinary Pediatric Feeding Program at U-M Health provides comprehensive in-person and virtual care for medically complex children with feeding challenges. We approach feeding as a developmental milestone—just like walking and talking—and focus on laying a strong foundation early by matching expectations and treatment to the child’s physiological and developmental readiness. This approach helps prevent feeding problems and equips children and families for long-term success.

Our Approach
We provide individualized care tailored to each child’s physical and developmental readiness. Our goal is to ensure all feeding experiences feel safe, comfortable, and positive. Rapid follow-up and close coordination with caregivers allow us to intervene early, protect early feeding experiences, and prevent the need for intensive, long-term treatment.
Our core interdisciplinary team includes specialists in feeding psychology, dietetics, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy. We also have a Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner and Consulting Pediatrician. Care is coordinated to address each child’s medical, nutritional, and developmental needs, creating care plans aligned with family goals and values.
We enhance a child’s intrinsic motivation to eat by ensuring physiological comfort and stability, following their cues, and keeping stress and discomfort separate from eating. We don’t view temporary feeding tube use as a setback—it’s a tool that allows us to keep feeding experiences positive while meeting the child’s nutritional needs and supporting development.
This protective approach helps even medically complex children—such as those with tracheostomies, congenital heart disease, or diaphragmatic hernia—achieve full oral feeding and tube weaning by age one or two.
This approach has been transformative for children and families. Caregivers are empowered to support their child’s individual pace and build a strong, lasting relationship with eating. By prioritizing comfort, safety, and trust, we help even the most medically complex children reach their full feeding potential and wean from their tubes without the need for external demands, contingencies, or reward systems.
Who We Treat
Our primary population consists of children under two years. We also provide limited consultative services for children older than 2 years. Our largest referral stream consists of babies discharged from the hospital with feeding tubes. We aim to provide rapid follow-up within 1-2 weeks of hospital discharge or outpatient referral.
