Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac Catheterization
What is cardiac catheterization?
Cardiac catheterization refers to a variety of tests in which catheters (small tubes) are inserted through a blood vessel and then directed to the heart to help diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. The catheter may be inserted through an artery or vein in the wrist, groin, or neck area, depending on the procedure.
Measurements can be obtained in the heart’s chambers that give important information about the blood pressure inside the heart, the lungs and across heart valves. Catheterization may also involve an injection of contrast dye to evaluate flow in vessels of the heart or lungs as part of an angiogram procedure to diagnose blockages or other issues with blood flow.
Catheterizations are most frequently performed by a member of the interventional cardiology team who are experts in the diagnosis of blood vessel blockages, valve disease, and other related cardiac conditions.
Our Approach
Our Cardiac Catheterization Lab is accredited by Corazon, recognizing our commitment to delivering high-quality cardiac catheterization and life-saving PCI care, including 24/7 emergency coverage, rigorous quality review processes and outcomes that meet or exceed national standards.
Our Cardiac Procedures Unit (CPU) team has extensive experience and takes great pride in prioritizing comfort and safety for patients and family members before, during and after a heart catheterization. Because catheterizations involve the use of x-ray technology, our interventional cardiologists employ a variety of techniques and equipment aimed at reducing radiation exposure during the procedure.
Beyond basic angiography (images of the heart vessels), U-M Health interventional cardiologists are experts in the use of additional technologies that allow for heart blood flow assessment and imaging of heart arteries from the inside out.
Heart catheterizations at U-M Health take place at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center. This provides an optimal opportunity for our cardiologists to have close consultation with experts in interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, heart valve disease, heart failure and transplant, and electrophysiology, all under one roof.
