Pediatric Cerebrovascular Program
Pediatric Cerebrovascular Program
The Pediatric Cerebrovascular Program at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital provides comprehensive care for infants, children and adolescents with stroke or other neurologic conditions related to blood vessel problems in the brain.
Our Approach
Our team of pediatric neurologists, neurosurgeons, geneticists, hematologists and physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists work in close coordination to address a patient’s complex cerebrovascular needs. The team includes a fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeon specializing in vascular diseases and a fellowship-trained pediatric neurointensivist with a special interest in cerebrovascular disorders.
Providers in our program have experience caring for children immediately after strokes and remain involved in long-term stroke care once patients are discharged home.
Who We Treat
We treat pediatric patients with stroke and other disorders of the brain’s arteries or veins (vasculopathies) such as:
- Perinatal stroke (immediately before or after birth)
- Childhood arterial ischemic stroke (an injury to the brain caused by a lack of oxygen resulting from obstruction of blood flow by blood clots, narrowed or damaged arteries, or both)
- Hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding into the brain from ruptured blood vessel)
- Venous stroke (when a blood clot blocks blood flow within the veins of the brain)
- Moyamoya (progressive narrowing of arteries to the brain)
- Arteriovenous malformations (abnormal connections between arteries and veins)
- Cerebral cavernous malformation (small, thin vessel walls that may leak blood into the surrounding brain)
- Various syndromes with vascular anomalies (PHACE syndrome and genetic syndromes)
- Aneurysms (abnormal outpouchings in the walls of blood vessels)
- Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (blood clot within the brain’s venous sinuses)
