Who We Treat
The impact of weight on fertility and reproductive health is complex. Research studies suggest that having obesity may be associated with:
- Irregular periods
- Difficulties getting pregnant
- Miscarriage
- Need for higher doses of fertility medications
Additionally, having obesity can increase the risks of complications during pregnancy such as:
- High blood pressure
- Gestational diabetes
- Increased rates of cesarean section
Appointment Information
Prior to your appointment, you will be asked to undergo lab testing and fill out some questionnaires. These labs will help the team understand your current metabolic health and will be used to develop a care plan. During your visit, you will be able to discuss different options for weight loss and your family-building goals.
The appointment involves a half-day virtual visit that features a comprehensive evaluation and discussion of a variety of treatment options to assist with weight loss - including diet plans, weight loss medications, meal-replacement programs and bariatric surgery. If you are eligible and interested in a program through Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes (MEND) or bariatric surgery, you are directly referred into those programs after the visit.
After your appointment, you will work closely with members of the nutrition and social work teams on your weight loss goals. You also will follow up with the reproductive endocrinology and infertility team to manage your reproductive treatment and assess weight loss progress.
To make an appointment with the team in the Michigan Interdisciplinary Clinic for Obesity and Reproduction, please call 734-763-6295.
