What is urinary retention?
Urinary retention is the inability to empty the bladder completely. It may occur suddenly or develop gradually over time. Retention can cause discomfort, urinary symptoms, and complications if left untreated.

What are the symptoms of urinary retention?
Symptoms may include:
- Difficulty starting urination
- Weak or interrupted urine stream
- A feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
- Frequent urination in small amounts
- Lower abdominal discomfort or pressure
- In severe cases, inability to urinate
How is urinary retention diagnosed?
Your doctor will diagnose urinary retention by reviewing your symptoms, performing a physical exam, and measuring how much urine remains in the bladder after voiding. Additional tests may be done to evaluate bladder function or identify obstruction.
How is urinary retention treated?
Treatment depends on the cause and severity of retention. Options may include catheterization, medications, or procedures to relieve obstruction or improve bladder emptying. Care is individualized for each patient.
