Questions and Answers About Cost Estimates

What is included in my estimate?

The cost estimates provided are for hospital and physician services delivered at Michigan Medicine, for example: lab tests, diagnostic imaging procedures, and surgical procedures.

If I have a surgical procedure done, are all the costs included in the estimate you provide?

The estimate will include the charges of the hospital, including OR time, pharmacy, implants, and supply costs, as well as the surgeon and, if applicable, anesthesia provider, radiologist, and/or pathologist.  The specific charges included will be based on historical data of similar procedures

I can't find my procedure/service, what should I do?

If you are not able to find the procedure you are looking for, you can call our Estimates team at 877-480-8757 Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

I have multiple insurance plans, how do I calculate my out-of-pocket costs?

Online estimates only consider one’s primary insurance.  Please contact our Estimates team at 877-480-8757 Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m for assistance calculating final out-of-pocket costs with multiple plans.

Does the estimate ensure that the service is a covered benefit?

No, the estimate does not ensure that the service is a covered benefit of your insurance plan. Please check your benefits or contact your insurance plan prior to scheduling.

Depending on the service, your insurance plan may also require a prior authorization. If a prior authorization is required, Michigan Medicine will work with your insurance plan to obtain the required authorization.

Will my final bill match the price estimate I was provided?

Not likely. The information provided through the online estimates tools is a best estimate based on the information we currently have and is not a guarantee of what you will be charged.

Additionally, please understand that in many cases it is impossible to predict final charges because of variables that affect your services, such as:

  • Length of time spent in surgery or recovery
  • Specific equipment, supplies and medications required
  • Additional tests required by your provider
  • Any unusual special care or unexpected conditions or complications

Finally, if authorized by your insurance carrier, your benefits will ultimately determine the amount you owe, including deductibles, co-pay, co-insurance and out-of-pocket maximums. If you are uninsured you may be eligible for a discount on your services.

How do I know whether my imaging study will be with or without contrast?

Your doctor's order for the exam will indicate whether it should be performed with IV contrast or not. If you are unsure, you should contact your doctor's office.

Who do I call if I have questions?
