Lung Cancer Program
Lung Cancer Program
The Rogel Cancer Center's Lung Cancer Program evaluates and treats patients with known or suspected lung tumors and severe emphysema. Each week, a team of thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists and other experts reviews each patient's case and provides a personalized treatment plan.
Our Approach
The Rogel Cancer Center takes a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Our team of thoracic surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists and nurses focus providing patients with the best possible care. In addition, cancer center researchers are working on finding more effective therapy for these diseases.
Services
In addition to the latest treatment options for lung cancer patients, a variety of clinical trials are also available, ranging from chemoprevention studies to the evaluation of state-of-the-art investigational therapies. Our team’s expertise with emerging technologies including photodynamic therapy and thoracoscopy allows for less invasive options in the diagnosis and care of patients with thoracic cancers.
Types of Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is divided into two large groups, each of which represents different types of cells and has different treatment requirements.

- Small cell lung cancer
- Mesothelioma
- ALK+ lung cancer
- Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
- Robotic bronchoscopy
- Ultrasound-guided transbronchial/transesophageal biopsy

- Complex lung resection, including segmentectomy and sleeve lobectomy
- Video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) lobectomy
- Robotic-assisted (DaVinci) lobectomy
- Esophageal and airway stenting
- Transhiatal esophagectomy
- Placement of indwelling pleural drainage catheters
- Radiofrequency ablation
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for certain cases of esophageal dysplasia or palliation of unresectable esophageal cancers
- Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) including RapidArc volumetric arc therapy (VMAT)
- SDX voluntary breath hold system for managing tumor motion during treatment
