About
Sarah Sperry, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Michigan Medicine and provides clinical services in The Bipolar Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry. She is a primary investigator with the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program and is also affiliated with the Eisenberg Family Depression Center. Dr. Sperry earned her degree in Clinical Psychology at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed her clinical residency at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and Ralph H. Johnson VAMC (The Charleston Consortium) before completing her postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital.
Dr. Sperry's area of clinical interest and expertise focus on evidenced-based psychotherapy and assessment of bipolar spectrum disorders. As part of her clinical residency, she received specialized training in evidenced-based psychotherapy for co-occurring alcohol and substance use disorder within the Center for Drug and Alcohol Problems at MUSC and the Substance use Treatment and Recovery Program at the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC. In addition, she completed formalized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia and evidenced-based therapies for Circadian Rhythm Disorders (e.g., delayed sleep-wake phase disorder) in the Sleep and Anxiety Treatment and Research Program at MUSC. Dr. Sperry integrates these specialty training areas into her already strong training in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and interpersonal and social rhythms therapy for bipolar disorder.
Dr. Sperry welcomes patients of all identity statuses. She aims to integrate evidenced-based intervention with personalized approaches to case conceptualization, treatment planning, and goal setting, taking into account intraindividual, interpersonal, and systemic factors that give rise to symptoms and distress. She encourages shared decision-making and the promotion of self-efficacy within the therapy setting.Areas of Practice
