Virtual Care Video Visits
Video visits allow you to save the time and cost of traveling to see your health care provider in person.
By having access to the same world-class care from University of Michigan Health online, you’ll communicate with a provider through a video call, using your smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer with a microphone and camera. Video Visits allow you to save the time and cost of traveling to see your health care provider in person.
Do not use a video visit if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Severe shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
- Headache and stiff neck (can't touch chin to chest)
- Too weak to stand
- Fainting or passing out
- High fever (>104F, 40C)
If you are experiencing these symptoms, please call 911 or your physician's office immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
A Video Visit is a scheduled appointment with your health care provider where you connect via the MyUofMHealth Patient Portal. You will be able to see, hear, and speak to your provider and they will be able to see, hear, and speak to you, similar to the experience you might get using Apple FaceTime or other video calls. Your visit will be just as thorough and personalized as a traditional clinic visit, but without a trip to one of our hospitals or health centers.
Anyone can request a Video Visit! Contact the clinic you are interested in being seen by, and ask if Video Visits are available. If Video Visits are available for the type of evaluation or care you need, the clinic staff will assist you in scheduling a Video Visit appointment. You must be physically located in the State of Michigan at the time of your scheduled Video Visit due to state law and regulations. If you cannot be in Michigan at the time of your appointment, you will be asked to reschedule.
A parent/full legal guardian may need proxy access to the patient’s MyUofMHealth Patient Portal account for some patients under 18, or adult patients with diminished mental capacity. Alternatively, in some pediatric departments, a patient 13–17 years of age will need an independent MyUofMHealth Patient Portal account in order to access a Video Visit. Questions about what type of account access is needed for your Video Visit can be directed to your participating clinic.
To request a standard Video Visit, call the clinic you are interested in being seen by and ask about scheduling a Video Visit. If the type of evaluation or care you need can be done through a Video Visit, the clinic staff will help you schedule a Video Visit appointment.
