Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative (YSPI) Toolkit
Suicide is a leading cause of death among youth ages 10–24, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated, system-wide prevention efforts. This toolkit brings together evidence-based resources and practical strategies to equip pediatric healthcare teams to effectively support youth and families experiencing a mental health crisis.
About the YSPI Toolkit
The Youth Suicide Prevention Initative (YSPI) toolkit was developed by a diverse group of care providers and staff at University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital to support pediatric providers across the State of Michigan with the implementation of Zero Suicide best practices in healthcare spaces. The Zero Suicide Framework was developed to identify core components to providing safer suicide prevention care. For more information, please visit the Zero Suicide website. This toolkit serves as a guide to those delivering care across a spectrum of medical and mental health settings serving youth including outpatient, emergency, and inpatient care settings.
- Purpose: The toolkit is to guide healthcare workers in the State of Michigan on how to implement Zero Suicide principles in their care setting.
- Overview: Utilizing this toolkit can identify evidence-based practices to improve identification, assessment, treatment, and safety planning for youth at-risk for suicide.
- Target Audience: This toolkit is relevant to primary care providers, emergency and crisis care providers, psychiatrists, psychologists, advanced practice practitioners, nurses, social workers, and many others in healthcare settings
The toolkit focuses on each of the seven elements of Zero Suicide (Lead, Train, Identify, Engage, Treat, Transition and Improve) and identifies free and Michigan-specific resources to access on your journey to enhancing suicide care at your institution.
The Suicide Prevention Resource Center also offers a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention that aligns with the Zero Suicide framework, providing practical resources to strengthen screening, assessment, treatment, and safety planning practices across care settings.
