Darin Bryce Zahuranec, MD, MS

Darin B. Zahuranec, M.D. (Residency 2005), is a professor of neurology in the University of Michigan Medical School. He joined the U-M faculty in 2005 as a clinical lecturer in the Department of Neurology, and was promoted to professor of neurology in 2007.

Dr. Zahuranec received his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1997, and earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve in 2001. He completed an internship at University Hospitals of Cleveland; residency in the Department of Neurology at the U-M, where he served as chief resident in 2004-05; and a fellowship in stroke and cerebrovascular disease here.

In addition to his U-M appointments, Dr. Zahuranec also has served as a staff physician in the Department of Neurology at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and a research staff physician in emergency medicine at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.

His current research activities include, Pilot Study of Gated Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Detection of Embolic Source after Ischemic Stroke, Brain Atrophy in Intracerebral Hemorrhage Patients, Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi (BASIC), Carotid Occlusion Surgery Study (COSS), and Randomized Evaluation of Recurrent Stroke Comparing Patent Foramen Ovale Closure to Established Current Standard of Care Treatment (RESPECT).

Dr. Zahuranec has served as an ad hoc reviewer for Neurology, the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Neuroophthalmology, and currently reviews for Stroke. He is a member of the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association, the American Academy of Neurology and the American Medical Association.

His bibliography includes numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, abstracts and clinical papers.
