Venous Ablation
Venous Ablation
What is venous ablation?
Venous ablation is a minimally invasive, outpatient treatment option to treat patients suffering from pain, heaviness, swelling, itching, throbbing, cosmetically unappealing or uncomfortable legs from varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency. At University of Michigan Health, we offer a range of ablation options including laser, radiofrequency (RFA, VNUS), chemical (VenaSeal, Varithena) and pharmacomechnical (ClariVein).
Procedure
During the procedure, a catheter is inserted into the diseased vein and causes the vein to close down. Blood then naturally re-routes to other healthy veins once the diseased vein is closed.
The procedure can be performed in an office setting or in one of our outpatient surgery facilities using local anesthesia or a mild sedative. We see patients at the Northville Health Center, Brighton Center for Specialty Care and at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
