Research Overview
Dr. Hemmila is funded by the NIH as a recipient of an NIGMS/AAST/ACS joint mentored clinical scientist K award. His current laboratory work is focused on the interaction of lung injury with the pathogenesis of pneumonia. He is also engaged in pursuing investigations on the use of nanoemulsion compounds in the treatment of burn wounds. His clinical research is centered on collaborative quality improvement and surgical outcomes. He serves as the Program Director for the Michigan Trauma Quality Improvement Program (MTQIP). This initiative is funded by BCBSM/BCN.
1. Surgical outcomes in trauma, burn, and general surgery. Utilization of on-site and national clinical databases to evaluate surgical outcomes using advanced statistical methods. Emphasis has been on blunt thoracic aortic injury, trauma quality improvement, and the relationship of process measures to outcomes in critical care.
2. Basic science research into the mechanisms of burn-induced cardiac dysfunction.
3. Clinical and basic science research into the pathophysiology and treatment of bacterial pneumonia.
4. Basic science research investigating burn wound inflammation. Utilization of local topical burn wound therapy to attenuate the systemic inflammation response following thermal injury.
