About
Dr. Ferguson is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Hepato-pancreato-biliary Surgery. Following undergraduate studies in Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the University of Illinois, he earned an MD and a PhD in Cancer Biology at the University of Chicago. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Chicago, where he served as an administrative chief resident and completed a medical education fellowship, followed by a clinical fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is board-certified in general surgery and complex general surgical oncology.
He has won numerous teaching awards at every stage of his career. He is the co-editor of Difficult Decisions in Surgical Oncology—An Evidence-Based Approach. He is active in the American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and Association for Surgical Education.
Clinical Specialization:Dr. Ferguson's clinical expertise is in the management of cancers and premalignant conditions of the pancreas, liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, and stomach.

Dr. Ferguson’s diverse research interests include the prediction of occult malignancy in pancreatic cysts as a surgical decision-making instrument; care disparities, optimization of care, and preoperative risk assessment in hepatopancreatobiliary surgery; organ-preserving surgery for early gastric cancer; and novel methods of communication, evaluation, and instruction in surgical education.
