    Dr. Shahzad I. Mian is the chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School, where he also holds the F. Bruce Fralick Professorship in Ophthalmology, and serves as Director of the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center. Dr. Mian’s leadership extends across clinical operations, faculty development, and education. He has previously served as the Vice Chair for Clinical Sciences and Learning and the Ambulatory Care Clinical Chief for Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences for Michigan Medicine. Dr. Mian earned his medical degree at Emory University School of Medicine in 1996, followed by residency training at the Wills Eye Hospital of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He completed a prestigious fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and joined the U-M faculty in 2002, rising to the rank of professor in 2016.

    Renowned for his expertise in cornea and refractive surgery, Dr. Mian’s research centers on advanced corneal transplantation techniques, eye banking, and medical education. His clinical interests include corneal transplantation, cataract and refractive surgery (including LASIK, PRK and ICL), and medical and surgical management of ocular surface diseases such as amniotic membrane grafts, limbal stem cell transplantation, and permanent keratoprostheses. He is also recognized for his care of corneal infections, dystrophies, tumors, and dry eye disease.

    Dr. Mian is widely respected as a dedicated educator and mentor, having served as residency program director for 15 years and previously as fellowship director. His commitment to medical education and mentorship has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Anthony Adamis Award for Outstanding Research (U-M Kellogg Eye Center, 2007), the Senior Achievement Award and Secretariat Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (2016, 2024), the Straatsma Award for Resident Education from the Association of University Professors in Ophthalmology (2017), and the Payton Award for Eye Banking from the Eye Bank Association of America (2019).

    Dr. Mian directs the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Surgical Curriculum for Ophthalmology Residents, serves on the board of directors and as senior medical director of Eversight Eye Bank, chairs the Eye Bank Association of America Medical Advisory Board, is president-elect of the Cornea Society, and president of the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
