About
Dr. Sahai attended medical school at the Government Medical College at Amritsar with the Baba Farid University of Health Science in India. He then completed his Masters in Epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health followed by Internal Medicine residency training at University of Pittsburgh. He completed his fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at Northwestern University where he also served as the Chief Fellow. Dr. Sahai joined University of Michigan as Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine in 2013.
Dr. Vaibhav Sahai is now a tenured Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Lindsay Olson Pancreatic Cancer Research Professor and serves as the Section Head of Gastrointestinal Oncology in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Michigan. He is a physician-scientist in the multidisciplinary pancreatic and liver tumor programs whose work focuses on translating laboratory discoveries into precision therapeutic strategies for pancreaticobiliary cancers. He serves as Principal Investigator on multiple investigator-initiated, multi-institutional trials and has extensive experience developing, conducting, and completing innovative early-phase studies. His translational program leverages pancreaticobiliary cancer biobanks that he directs, including patient biospecimens, patient-derived cell lines, and organoid models, to evaluate novel therapies and guide phase 1/2 investigator-initiated trials. In addition, he is the Founding Director of the Tumor Response Assessment Core (TRAC) and his imaging lab research expertise spans metrics, morphomics and radiomics across pancreaticobiliary cancers.
As Co-Director of the GI Oncology Clinical Research Team at the Rogel Cancer Center, Dr. Sahai oversees and contributes to investigator-initiated, cooperative group, and industry-sponsored GI oncology trials. He also chairs the Rogel Cancer Center Data and Safety Monitoring Committee, which monitors safety and data integrity for investigator-initiated and other cancer clinical trials without an independent monitoring body at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Sahai's research focus lies in experimental therapeutics in pancreatic and biliary tract cancer via a molecular-biology based approach in the laboratory with the aim to perform clinical and translational research.
