The department of pediatric orthopaedic surgery at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital provides full-service care to newborns through young adults.

An Experienced Team of Pediatric Orthopaedic Specialists
Children are not just small adults. The pediatric orthopaedic team at Mott is experienced at how to examine and treat children in a way that makes them relaxed and cooperative. Our specialists are skilled in the unique aspects of treating conditions in children who are still growing and developing and in many cases the equipment we use is specially designed for children. If your pediatrician suggests that your child see a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, you can be assured that he or she has the widest range of treatment options, the most extensive and comprehensive training, and the greatest expertise in dealing with children and in treating children’s orthopaedic disorders.
In 2012, U.S. News and World Report ranked Mott Orthopaedics #14 nationally, the highest ranking pediatric orthopaedic program in Michigan. Our team sees approximately 13,000 patients per year and performs more than 1,700 procedures annually.
All of the doctors on our team are board-certified in their specialties. In addition to doctors, our team includes highly trained genetic counselors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who specialize in musculoskeletal conditions. We also work closely with our colleagues in radiology, sports medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation and orthotics and prosthetic specialists. Our patients have full access to the wide variety of services available through the world renowned University of Michigan Health System.
Depending on your child’s individual situation, his or her course of treatment could include physical and rehabilitation therapies, braces, splints and casts. When surgery is needed, we are among the most experienced orthopaedic surgery teams in the country, offering the very latest procedures and techniques to treat musculoskeletal problems.
Osteogenesis Imperfecta Specialty Clinic
The osteogenesis imperfecta specialty clinic is a two-day clinic offered multiple times a year at Michigan Medicine. The multidisciplinary clinic offers several services provided by orthopaedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, endocrinology, genetics, occupational therapy, physical therapy, cardiology, dentistry, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, and social work. Patients and families attend one clinic annually to develop a multidisciplinary treatment approach for this rare disorder. The multidisciplinary osteogenesis imperfecta clinic has become a destination for patients with OI, and offers peer and family support opportunities.
Researching New Treatments for Conditions Affecting the Bones, Muscles and Joints in Children
In addition to providing excellent clinical care, many of our doctors conduct pioneering research studies to change and improve the way some of the most challenging conditions in pediatric orthopaedics are treated. We are among the nation’s leading research centers in congenital scoliosis, with our faculty leading numerous studies regarding the causes and treatment of spinal curvature.
