  • About

Dr. Eric Smith is a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and a member of the Inherited Cardiomyopathy Program at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center.

Dr. Smith earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University before spending three years as an engineer in the medical device industry at Stryker. He received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and completed both his residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Michigan. Furthermore, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship in genetic cardiovascular diseases and earned a Master’s degree in Human Genetics at the University of Michigan. His clinical expertise centers on genetic cardiomyopathies and arrhythmia disorders.

Understanding that heart conditions can be frightening and confusing, Dr. Smith focuses on helping patients develop a deep understanding of their diagnosis. He is a firm advocate for patient involvement and collaborative decision-making in disease management.

Outside of the Clinic Eric is a family man, a downhill skier, and a delusional amateur athlete. As a left wing for the Brewser’s Hockey Club, he spends his Tuesday and Saturday nights hacking at shins (occasionally scoring goals) and wondering why he didn't retire in his 20s. If he looks tired during your consultation, it’s probably because he had a 10:00 PM puck drop and a post-game "team meeting" that went too long. He loves his wife, his three kids, and the outdoors—in roughly that order, depending on how the kids are acting that day.

    Areas of Practice

Inherited cardiomyopathies and arrhythmia disorders, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), familial dilated cardiomyopathy, left ventricular noncompaction, arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, sports cardiology (athletes with cardiomyopathies).
