Robert Harris Gilman, MD, DMD

Robert H. Gilman, MD, DMD, completed his Plastic Surgery residency at the University of Michigan in 1982. He earned his MD from Boston University School of Medicine and his DMD from Boston University School of Dentistry. He subsequently trained in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery through the combined residency program at Boston University and Tufts University. Dr. Gilman is a diplomate of both the American Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Gilman spent 32 years in private practice in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and taught in the Harvard Combined Residency Training Program in Plastic Surgery for 15 years. He also served as a Clinical Instructor in Plastic Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Gilman has maintained a longstanding relationship with the University of Michigan Section of Plastic Surgery, returning frequently as a guest lecturer. He has been a featured speaker for both the Reed O. Dingman and William C. Grabb Endowed Lectureships and has served as the keynote speaker for the biennial Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons meeting on Mackinac Island.

In 2013, Dr. Gilman was recruited by the University of Michigan Section of Plastic Surgery to return to Ann Arbor as a full-time faculty member. He was charged with revitalizing aesthetic plastic surgery training and has established a chief resident clinic that provides supervised, hands-on aesthetic patient care at a discounted rate. He also established an endowed lectureship in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, bringing internationally recognized experts to Ann Arbor to educate University of Michigan plastic surgery trainees.

Dr. Gilman has led a pediatric reconstructive surgical team to Colombia, South America, for 26 years, providing surgical care for children with facial deformities, including cleft lip and palate; burn scar contractures and other body deformities; and congenital and acquired hand deformities. Through this work, he has hosted 25 University of Michigan residents, providing them with firsthand experience in global surgical care and the unique needs of underserved communities.

Through the University of Michigan President’s Initiative, with support from generous donors, Dr. Gilman established the Robert H. Gilman, MD Fund for International Travel. The fund provides financial assistance to plastic surgery residents seeking international medical mission experiences.

Dr. Gilman is a member of numerous national and state plastic surgery societies and is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. He currently serves as President of The Rhinoplasty Society, an international association of surgeons recognized for expertise in nasal surgery.

Throughout his private practice, clinical teaching at Harvard, and current role at the University of Michigan, Dr. Gilman has focused on all aspects of aesthetic plastic surgery. His particular areas of interest include rhinoplasty and facial rejuvenation procedures, both non-invasive and surgical. He also has extensive experience in post-pregnancy abdominal and breast surgery, aesthetic breast augmentation, and body contouring through liposuction and fat transfer.

As a Clinical Associate Professor on the Michigan Plastic Surgery faculty, Dr. Gilman is committed to providing the highest quality plastic surgical care to his patients while continuing the tradition of excellence in plastic surgery education and training for University of Michigan residents and trainees.
