About
Gifty Kwakye, MD, MPH, MEHP, FACS, FASCRS, is the Arthur W. Fleming, M.D. Research Professor, Clinical Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colorectal Surgery, and Assistant Dean for Clinical Medical Education at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Kwakye graduated from Yale University with degrees in Biology and Psychology and received her medical degree from Yale School of Medicine in 2010. She earned a Master of Public Health and a Master of Education in the Health Professions from Johns Hopkins University. She completed her general surgery residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and her fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota. She joined the University of Michigan faculty in 2018. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Kwakye is a leader in medical education and global surgery. As Assistant Dean for Clinical Medical Education, she oversees clinical education across the core clinical clerkships and advanced clinical curriculum at the University of Michigan Medical School. She is also actively engaged in expanding colorectal surgical training and care in sub-Saharan Africa, including helping to establish Ghana’s first colorectal surgery fellowship.
