Shitanshu Uppal, MBBS, MBA

Dr. Uppal is a board-certified Gynecologic Oncologist and Division Chief for the Gynecology Oncology service at the University of Michigan. He is also the Director of Gynecologic Oncology Initiatives at the Michigan Oncology Quality Consortium (MOQC) - a statewide quality improvement network.

Dr. Uppal received his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India. He completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and a fellowship in Gynecology Oncology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2014. Dr. Uppal also holds a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of the Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

Dr. Uppal has been in clinical practice for over ten years and is involved in many Quality Improvement Projects in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, nationally and across Michigan. Widely acknowledged as a thought leader in Gynecology Oncology and quality-of-care, he has authored over 75 peer-reviewed manuscripts and instituted changes in the health system to improve outcomes after surgery, reduce the cost of care and implemented patient-centered care delivery systems.

Dr. Uppal specializes in the treatment of gynecologic cancers including ovarian, cervical and endometrial cancer. He is trained in laparoscopy and robotic surgery.

University of Michigan Health participates with most health insurance plans.

Dr. Uppal's research focuses on reducing surgical site infection and opioid utilization after gynecologic surgery. In addition, he is the co-director of Michigan Oncology Quality Consortium, an organization focused on improving outcomes of cancer patients in the state of Michigan.
