About
Dr. Dalton, MPH, is a Professor, the Associate Chair for Research, and the Co-Director of the Gynecology Division, at the University of Michigan’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is also the Director of the Program on Women’s Healthcare Effectiveness Research (PWHER) and the Co-Director of the Family Planning Fellowship Program. In addition, Dr. Dalton is a member of the Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation (IHPI), and a faculty affiliate of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWIG) at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Dalton completed medical school and a Masters of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a postdoctoral fellowship in health services research at the University of Michigan. In 2012, Dr. Dalton completed a Policy Fellowship with the University of Michigan Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation (CHRT).
In 2017, she received the University of Michigan’s MICHR Distinguished Clinical and Translational Research Mentor Award for her excellence in the mentorship of early-career faculty. And in 2019, Dr. Dalton received the endowed Timothy R. B. Johnson MD, Global Women’s Health Professorship. This Professorship helps ensure exceptional care and justice for women around the globe. It is awarded to an individual who shares in the commitment of being a voice for women throughout the world; a voice for them in important conversations that impact their care and a commitment to fighting for their reproductive rights and improved health wherever they live.

Research Overview
Dr. Dalton is an internationally recognized expert in women’s health services research, including studies on family planning, access to care, healthcare utilization, out-of-pocket spending for healthcare, and equity. She has conducted multiple studies examining the effects of the Affordable Care Act on women’s access, utilization, and costs of healthcare.
In her roles as Associate Chair for Research and Director of the Program on Women’s Healthcare Effectiveness Research (PWHER) in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Dalton mentors numerous faculty, fellows, and students involved in domestic and global health research. In 2017, she received the University of Michigan’s MICHR Distinguished Clinical and Translational Research Mentor Award for her excellence in the mentorship of early-career faculty.
Dr. Dalton has received funding from AHRQ, as well as several foundations.
