About
Dr. Michael McGee is Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colorectal Surgery at the University of Michigan. Prior to obtaining his medical degree at Drexel University, he was trained as a mechanical engineer. After completing general surgery training at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. McGee completed colorectal surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. While at Case Western, Dr. McGee completed the Dudley P. Allen Scholarship dedicated to clinical research in minimally invasive surgery and surgical endoscopy.
Dr. McGee was recruited to Northwestern University where he practiced for 11 years and held several system-wide administrative roles for Northwestern Medicine before joining the University of Michigan in 2022. Dr. McGee served as chief of the colorectal division for 3.5 years prior to taking a leadership role in 2026 within Michigan Medicine where he currently oversees several surgical ambulatory care clinics for a variety of adult and pediatric surgical service lines.
Dr. McGee’s clinical interests include complex re-operative abdominal surgery, minimally invasive colorectal surgery, fixing surgical complications, colonoscopy, and anorectal surgery for cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), and diverticulitis. He served as co-director of the 50+ hospital Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative (ISQIC) where he led day-to-day operations and statewide quality improvement projects for thousands of surgical patients in Illinois. Since 2024, Dr. McGee has served as co-director of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC) which coordinates surgical quality improvement for over 70 hospitals in Michigan.
Dr. McGee’s research interests include surgical quality improvement, implementation science, and patient education. He is an active member of several national surgical organizations, multiple editorial boards, and has authored over 60 publications, 10 textbook chapters, and received multiple grants and awards for research, teaching, and humanism. Dr. McGee currently is associate editor for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) textbook and participates with developing care guidelines for multiple colorectal diseases.

Research Overview
Dr. McGee’s research involves design, implementation, and scientific analysis of large-scale surgical quality improvement projects focusing on perioperative care optimization. As faculty and later co-director of both the 50+ hospital Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative (ISQIC) and Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC), Dr. McGee oversees statewide quality improvement programs. Previous projects included reducing surgical site infections (SSI) and implementing a multi-faceted “prehabilitation” program for colorectal surgery patients. Dr. McGee seeks to understand patient, surgeon, and institutional factors that impact implementation fidelity across diverse hospital networks.
