About
Dr. Underwood is a fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon whose practice is dedicated to the surgical management of thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal gland disorders. He performs more than 350 endocrine operations each year, making him one of the highest-volume endocrine surgeons in the region. His practice includes a strong focus on complex reoperative thyroid and parathyroid procedures as well as the treatment of advanced thyroid cancer.
Dr. Underwood earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received the Rosenbower Award in Surgery, given to the top graduating student pursuing a surgical career. He completed his general surgery residency at NYU Langone Health/Bellevue Hospital in New York City and a clinical fellowship in endocrine surgery at the University of Michigan.
He holds a Focused Practice Designation (FPD) in Adult Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery from the American Board of Surgery - an advanced credential recognizing surgeons who demonstrate exceptional case volume, technical expertise, and a multidisciplinary approach to the care of patients with complex endocrine disorders. Fewer than 400 surgeons in the United States currently hold this designation, underscoring his commitment to maintaining a high level of specialization and quality in thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
Dr. Underwood is board-certified in general surgery and an active member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. His practice is centered on delivering safe, effective, and thoughtful surgical care, with an emphasis on collaboration, communication, and long-term patient outcomes.

I had my [...] surgery with Dr. Underwood at the University of Michigan, and I'm really grateful I chose him. I don't usually trust easily when it comes to my health, and honestly, I still had doubts even going into surgery. I had seen a few different surgeons and went back and forth, but something about him just felt right, and I'm glad I went with my gut. Right before surgery, he did his own [...] and told me I'd need a [...] along with [...]. I wasn't sure about it, but he said he was confident that [...] would come back positive - and he was right.
