    Dr. K. Elizabeth Speck is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Section of Pediatric Surgery and is board certified in both general surgery and pediatric surgery. She received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and then completed her general surgery residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. During her general surgery training, she completed an NIH-sponsored Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at UNC. Dr. Speck completed her Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and then joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Due to her interest in clinical outcomes research, she obtained her master’s degree in clinical research design and Statistical Analysis from the University of Michigan in 2017.

    Dr. Speck is a Fellow in the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS). She is a member of the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS), the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group (IPEG), and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). At the University of Michigan, she is a member of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation.

    Clinical Specialization:

    Dr. Speck’s surgical practice encompasses all areas of general and thoracic pediatric surgery with a focus on minimally invasive surgery. As the Director of Pediatric Colorectal Surgery, she has a particular interest in colorectal diseases, including anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung disease, and differences of sex differentiation (DSD).

    Research Overview

    Dr. Speck's research focuses on clinical outcomes assessment and implementation science in pediatric surgery. She is the Director of Pediatric Surgical Clinical Research and serve as the Program Director for our Pediatric Surgery Research Fellowship. Her work has contributed to defining the national landscape of practice variability and outcomes across common pediatric surgical conditions focused in the areas of gastrointestinal, colorectal, and thoracic surgery. These efforts have informed several large-scale multi-center projects being conducted across the Midwest Pediatric Surgical Consortium (MWPSC) aimed at standardizing care and optimizing outcomes across institutions.
