About
Versha Pleasant, MD, MPH, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan. She is also the Director of the Cancer Genetics and Breast Health Clinic at Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. She completed a Master of Public Health at Yale University and medical school training at Georgetown University School of Medicine. She then completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, followed by a fellowship training in Cancer Genetics & Breast Health at the University of Michigan.
Currently, Dr. Pleasant runs the Cancer Genetics & Breast Health Clinic, which cares for hundreds of patients with BRCA and other genetic mutations that increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. She also provides specialized gynecologic care for breast cancer survivors. She offers both medical care and surgical intervention for these patients, as well as the most cutting-edge and up-to-date information in the rapidly evolving field of cancer genetics.
Dr. Pleasant is deeply interested in health disparities, particularly in breast cancer and genetic testing barriers facing Black women. She is currently co-investigator of a T32 NIH grant examining ways to increase education of genetic counseling and testing among African American women. She has previously served on the AAMC’s Group on Diversity and Inclusion, working on ways to decrease health disparities in medicine on a national level. She is also interested in novel ways to increase knowledge of healthcare providers in regards to genetic mutations that increase patients’ risk of breast and ovarian cancer. She has won multiple teaching awards during her training, namely the Golden Beeper Award, the Bronze Beeper Award, the Outstanding Educator Award, and the Token of Appreciation from Medical Students Award. She is also a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
Of note, prior to her career in medicine, Dr. Pleasant previously worked for several years as a Program Manager for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Sub-Saharan Africa (particularly Rwanda and Cote d’Ivoire). She is fluent in French.Areas of Practice
