About
Dr. Okeoma Mmeje is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan Medical School. She is a physician-scientist and health system leader with more than 20 years of experience advancing women’s health through clinical care, research, population health, and health-system strategy. As an obstetrician–gynecologist, Dr. Mmeje specializes in reproductive infectious diseases and general obstetrics and gynecology, with particular expertise in the treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted infections and recurrent vaginitis. Her clinical and research work focuses on expanding equitable access to sexual and reproductive health services for historically marginalized populations, including adolescents and young adults, pregnant persons, and individuals living with HIV.
Dr. Mmeje leads multidisciplinary academic and community partnerships to implement and evaluate reproductive health programs and translate evidence into clinical practice. Her work has advanced STI treatment and prevention policies, including expedited partner therapy, through collaborations with school-based health centers, public health agencies, clinical departments, and other health systems. Through this work, she seeks to improve reproductive health outcomes and reduce inequities in care.
