About
Jorge Machicado, MD, MPH, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Machicado earned his medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru, and received a Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and advanced therapeutic endoscopy fellowship at the University of Colorado. Dr. Machicado joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2021. He has authored over 120 peer-reviewed articles, most of them on pancreatitis and pancreatic cysts. He has authored several national guideline documents in the appropriate use of endoscopy for different indications. His work in chronic pancreatitis is funded by the American College of Gastroenterology Junior Faculty Development Grant, Winn Excellence in Clinical Trials Award, and institutional funding.
Dr. Machicado has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters. He serves as a member of the ASGE Standards of Practice Committee and a councillor of the AGA Institute Council Pancreatic Disorders Section. He is a frequently invited reviewer for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatology, United European Gastroenterology Journal, among other journals. In his free time, he enjoys running, spending time with his kids, and exploring new restaurants.

Research Overview
Dr. Machicado's research focuses on pain in chronic pancreatitis. His work has the potential to find better ways to assess and treat pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis. He also conducts research on endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic methods for pancreatic cysts. His work is funded by different grant sources. He is interested in precision medicine, clinical trials, and epidemiology.
