Research Overview
My current area of work focuses on novel concepts for PFO tunnel sizing using 3D TEE. Current terminology for PFO tunnel sizing remains unstandardized and device size selection for transcatheter PFO closure is highly variable. While traditional descriptors of PFOs include tunnel length and tunnel height, they are not consistently used to describe reproducible dimensions and remain inaccurate in predicting true tunnel size. We have introduced the dimension of tunnel width at the right atrial and left atrial openings and have found them to be better descriptors of PFO size.
