About
Dr. Patel completed undergraduate and graduate studies in Biology at the University of Michigan. After graduating from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, he returned to the University of Michigan Health System for Residency training in Internal Medicine and Fellowship training in Nephrology. He has been a member of the University of Michigan faculty since 1999, and currently serves as Director of the Kidney Stone Prevention Program. He is interested in all aspects of kidney disease, with a particular focus on kidney stone prevention, fluid and electrolyte management, and Lithium related renal disease.
Areas of Practice
Kidney stones, nephrocalcinosis, electrolytes, polycystic disease and all aspects of general adult Nephrology, including chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Research Overview
We are interested in understanding the mechanisms by which tissue specific transcription factors regulate gene expression patterns in the developing organ and how these same transcription factors regulate homeostasis in the adult organism. Our long-term goals are to understand whether gain or loss of these transcription factors contributes to the development and progression of kidney disease
