Through an innovative collaboration, U-M Health patients can be admitted to a special U-M Health staffed inpatient service at Trinity Health Ann Arbor (formerly St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor)..

The service provides inpatient general medical care, specialized geriatric care, and addiction medicine services for U-M Health patients.

U-M Health physicians on the unit will provide seamless coordination of care and ensure your primary and specialty care providers have the information they need about your hospital stay to support continued healing after discharge.

Who can receive care from the U-M Health inpatient service at Trinity Health Ann Arbor?

If your physician determines you need inpatient hospital care, he or she may recommend you be admitted to our inpatient service at Trinity Health Ann Arbor. The unit is designed to provide care for patients with general medical needs, elderly patients who can benefit from the specialized geriatric staffing, and patients who require addiction medicine services.

Who will be on my care team?

Your U-M Health doctor will be overseeing your care in collaboration with St. Joe nursing and support staff. If your care requires consultation from a specialist, this will be provided by an IHA provider. You may also see a Clinical Assistant, a U-M Health employee, who will be working to coordinate your care for a smooth transition after discharge from the hospital back to your primary care doctor and any existing specialists you see. Rest assured, the entire care team will be working closely together to give you the excellent care you have come to expect from U-M Health.

How am I transferred to Trinity Health Ann Arbor?

Your transport will be facilitated by Emergency Department (ED) nursing staff. Neither you, nor your insurance, will be billed for the transfer.

Where do I direct my family/loved ones?

At Trinity Health Ann Arbor, you will have a private room. Your family member is even welcome to sleep in your room if you wish. Please refer to www.stjoeshealth.org/annarbor for more information about the current Trinity Health Ann Arbor visitor policy.

After 10:00 pm, visitors can use the Trinity Health Ann Arbor Emergency Department entrance to obtain badge access to your room.

Who will I receive bills from for services provided?

Because the unit is located in Trinity Health Ann Arbor, Trinity Health Ann Arbor and IHA Physician Group will be billing for your care. You may also receive billing paperwork related to your Emergency Department visit at U-M Health, if you go there before being admitted to the unit.

Will my care be covered by my insurance?

A thorough process has been developed to evaluate insurance coverage upfront to ensure that patients and their families fully understand how their insurance coverage will apply to the care they receive on inpatient service at Trinity Health Ann Arbor. If a gap in your insurance coverage is discovered, our team will discuss this with you as soon as it is identified. Care management staff in the U-M Health Emergency Department or at Trinity Health Ann Arbor can help answer more detailed questions you have about your insurance coverage. How will U-M Health and Trinity Health Ann Arbor share electronic medical records and documentation?

Your medical records for the admission to Trinity Health Ann Arbor, including information about your hospital stay, lab/test results, and doctor visit summaries, will be available to you through the secure Trinity Health Ann Arbor patient portal. Visit www.stjoeshealth.org/mychart to access your key health information 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Copies of relevant medical records will be sent to your designated physician of choice and will be available for review by your U-M Health providers.
