The PROSE Clinic provides advanced treatment for patients suffering from complex corneal disease and its complications, including severe dry eye syndrome, ocular graft versus host disease, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, and corneal ectasia.
The Kellogg Eye Center is one of only a few eye centers nationwide with specialists trained to design and fit patients with this novel prosthetic device. The treatment dramatically reduces eye pain that patients experience with corneal disease.
PROSE is a transparent dome, filled with a sterile saline solution that serves as an artificial tear reservoir, providing constant lubrication to the eye, and allowing oxygen to reach the cornea. The device, about the size of a nickel and composed of gas permeable material, creates a smooth surface over the damaged cornea.
Patients are treated at the Kellogg Eye Center where Karen S. DeLoss, O.D., who completed a clinical fellowship at the Boston Foundation for Sight, custom designs and fits the prosthetic device for each patient. Partnering with Kellogg cornea specialists, Dr. DeLoss works with patients on average five to seven visits to assure the device is properly fitted.
PROSE stands for Prosthetic Replacement of the Ocular Surface Ecosystem and was developed by the Boston Foundation for Sight.
