    Chris grew up in Dexter, MI and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. He went to medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where he met his wife, Kayla. He completed residency at the University of Iowa and a fellowship in hip and knee reconstruction at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Chris and Kayla are excited to be returning to Ann Arbor with their son, and their Pyrenees-pointer mix.

    Chris’ clinical and research interests encompass the entire spectrum of hip and knee arthritis, including primary osteoarthritis, inflammatory conditions, avascular necrosis (AVN), hip dysplasia, failed hip and knee replacements, and infected hip and knee replacements. He performs outpatient hip and knee replacement, robotic-assisted total knee replacement, and revision (re-do) surgeries for failed hip and knee replacements, including cases of periprosthetic joint infection, high-grade bone loss, and extensor mechanism deficiency.

    Research Overview

    Dr. Carender is an avid clinical researcher, publishing over 60 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and textbook chapters. His work has been presented at national and international research meetings, and he has won regional, national, and international awards for his research on clinical outcomes following hip and knee replacement. Dr. Carender serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Arthroplasty as an Elite Reviewer and serves as a peer reviewer for multiple other orthopedic publications.
