Stone Prevention Clinic

About the Stone Prevention Clinic

The Stone Prevention Clinic is held on the 2nd Thursday and Friday of each month for patients who are prone to kidney stones. Patients who have had more than two kidney stones are likely to develop them again during their lifetimes. Our team is committed to not only treating the kidney stones, but preventing their recurrence and growth.

In order to prevent the formation of new stones, we perform a complete medical, metabolic, nutritional and lifestyle assessment. This evaluation includes not only analysis of actual kidney stones, but also blood and urine tests to determine the exact risk factors for the formation of new stones. The data and evaluation are incorporated into an individual treatment plan. The vast majority of our patients take medication to help prevent stone formation. In addition, depending on stone composition, doctors can make dietary recommendations, such as foods to avoid in the future, and set up nutritional guidelines that fit the patient's lifestyle.

For the medical treatment of kidney stones, our nephrologists are specialists in the field of all aspects of kidney disease, kidney stones, and the metabolic evaluation and prevention of stones. Together with our urologists, the goal of the Stone Prevention Clinic is to develop an individualized strategy for the most effective way to treat the stones and then develop a course of treatment that will prevent the stones from recurring.
