Rehabilitation and Therapy

The University of Michigan Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has provided excellent consultation, evaluation and rehabilitative services to patients since the department was founded in 1950.

Today – due to the coordinated efforts of our skilled physicians and therapists – we are nationally and internationally known, and one of the most sought-after physical medicine and rehabilitation programs in the region.

Inpatient rehabilitation beds are available for both pediatric and adult patients, with special emphasis on the rehabilitation needs of traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopaedic and stroke patients.

Outpatient services are available at University Hospital and several satellite facilities.

Our methods involve an interdisciplinary team that works to increase function, decrease pain and disability, and maximize performance at work, in school, during recreation and in all other areas of life.

The Department now has more than 50 faculty physicians, including 30 physiatrists. There are an additional 20 faculty members who have Ph.D.s in rehabilitation psychology, engineering and basic sciences. We collaborate with more than 450 allied health professionals, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, rehabilitation engineers, orthotists, prosthetists, nurses,  speech-language pathologists and other support staff.

The Department is nationally and regionally recognized as a leader in advancing the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation and the subspecialties of pediatric rehabilitation, pain management and spinal cord injury medicine.
