Vocal Health Center

Are you experiencing problems with your voice? Do you find you’re constantly hoarse, straining to use your voice, or that your voice has changed in some way?

At the Michigan Medicine Vocal Health Center, we’ve been helping people just like you since 1996. Today, we are recognized locally, regionally and nationally as a top center for vocal health. We are experts in diagnosing and treating all types of voice conditions, and we believe in educating our patients so they can maintain good vocal health.

Most voice disorders are easily treatable when diagnosed properly. But it is important to address your vocal needs quickly before they get worse. A voice problem can indicate something as simple as viral laryngitis or as serious as vocal fold (cord) cancer.

Symptoms and Telltale Signs

Voice disorders have many different symptoms, including:

    • Recurrent or persistent hoarseness
    • Loss of vocal range
    • Voice fatigue
    • Decreased volume or voice projection
    • Neck or throat discomfort with voice use

We treat the full range of vocal cord problems and vocal cord damage, including:

What to Expect

At the Vocal Health Center, our compassionate team of experts will guide you through the treatment process. Your journey will begin with an evaluation by a physician laryngologist (an ear, nose and throat specialist). Your evaluation will consist of:

  • A medical and voice history
  • An ear, nose and throat examination
  • A vocal capabilities assessment
  • An in-depth evaluation of your vocal folds
  • No special preparation is needed

If you’re a professional person with special voice demands – such as a teacher, singer, salesperson or business executive – you’ll be pleased to know about our Multidisciplinary Clinic for Professional and Occupational Voice Users. In addition to your medical examination, you will also receive an in-depth assessment by a speech pathologist and, if needed, a voice-training specialist from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater & Dance. Other people may be candidates for this clinic as well.

We work together in a multidisciplinary environment so that we can develop an individualized care plan just for you.
