Anyone whose voice is essential to his or her job is considered an occupational or professional voice user. Occupational voice users include teachers, clergy, salespeople, courtroom attorneys, telemarketers, receptionists and others. Professional voice users include singers, actors and broadcast personalities. For all of these individuals, the voice and spoken communication is an essential part of what they do.
Multidisciplinary Clinic for Professional and Occupational Voice Users
Occupational and professional voice users are at greater risk for developing voice disorders. Furthermore, the consequences for even a minor voice disorder can have a significant impact on the user. Most voice disorders are readily treatable when diagnosed properly. We feel that the optimal treatment of occupational and professional voice users requires a comprehensive, team-based approach. We have assembled a team of experts from the University of Michigan Health System and University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance to provide specialized care for individuals with special or high vocal demands.

What to Expect
At your first appointment, you will receive a thorough evaluation by a physician laryngologist. This includes a medical and voice history and an ear, nose and throat examination, followed by a vocal capabilities assessment and an in-depth evaluation of the patient’s vocal folds using the latest diagnostic equipment. You will also undergo in-depth assessments by a speech pathologist and a voice training specialist. Once a diagnosis is obtained, the multidisciplinary team works together to develop and implement an individual care plan.
Your follow up appointments may or may not include visits with all members of the multidisciplinary team. This is determined by your individual care plan. You can rest assured knowing that this plan was developed by a team of experts who have your best interests in mind and wish to see you succeed.
