Food Allergy

A food allergy is an allergic reaction triggered by eating or being exposed to a certain food.  Food allergies are a serious medical condition, affecting up to 1 in 13 children in the U.S.

The University of Michigan Food Allergy Clinic delivers the highest quality care and comprehensive clinical services for food allergy patients. 

Our team includes board-certified doctors, nurses and staff dedicated to caring for our patients and families.

You can count on the U-M Food Allergy Clinic for:

  • Medical evaluation, testing and diagnosis and expert care from doctors who are board-certified in pediatrics/internal medicine, and have completed specialized fellowships in allergy and immunology. 

  • State-of-the-art clinic and allergy-free facilities with specially designed exam rooms and testing suites to ensure patient safety and comfort. Our Domino’s Farms facility includes a sanitized kitchen with its own ventilation system and negative-pressure rooms to prevent the spread of airborne allergens.

  • Inpatient testing capabilities at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital to offer fully supervised allergy testing within a full-service children’s medical facility

  • Development of individual care plans to meet each food allergy patient’s needs, including Food Allergy Action Plans (FAAP) and customized school health forms.

  • Expert treatment of related conditions, such as eczema, asthma, hay fever, eosinophilic disorders and Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES).

  • Multidisciplinary eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) clinic in conjunction with the U-M pediatric gastroenterology department.

  • Coordinated care of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in conjunction with adult and pediatric gastroenterologists.

  • Assistance with school planning and accommodations from a specialized food allergy nurse.

  • Nutritional guidance available from a registered dietitian.

  • Individual and family counseling available from a licensed social worker.

  • Printed and online health education materials for managing food allergies, plus one-on-one support from a specialized food allergy nurse.

  • Free food allergy education and training sessions to help families, caregivers and communities manage food allergies more successfully, keeping patients safer and healthier.

Our faculty are also engaged in innovative research aimed at improving patients’ quality of life and, ultimately, finding a cure for the millions who suffer from food allergies. The Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center is a world-class research initiative, led by internationally renowned research faculty with a skilled staff and access to state-of-the–art facilities. Our patient-centered research is aimed at producing measurable outcomes that provide concrete solutions for those with food allergies. The goal of our research is to translate the results into health care policy and break-through therapies that improve the day-to-day lives of families affected by food allergy.
