Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes

Hormones play a major role in how we develop and grow, regulate sugar, metabolize food and so much more. The endocrine system, which includes the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal gland and pancreas, uses these hormones to "communicate" with the body. The Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes offers comprehensive services in the general area of endocrine and metabolic disorders, including:

  • Diabetes and diabetes complications
  • Abnormalities in body weight
  • Osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease
  • Abnormalities in calcium regulation
  • Diseases of the thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands

In addition, we have several multidisciplinary clinics that offer specific, endocrine-related services, such as:

  • Intensive insulin treatment of diabetes
  • An Endocrine Oncology Program specializing in thyroid and adrenal neoplasm’s (abnormal mass of tissue)
  • Management of diabetes or thyroid disease during pregnancy
  • Evaluation and treatment of pituitary tumors
  • An outpatient endocrine testing unit for the performance of endocrine and metabolic stimulation, suppression and tolerance testing
  • A comprehensive Outpatient Diabetes Education Program

The Leader in Comprehensive Diabetes Care

The number of Americans living with diabetes has more than doubled in the last 25 years. The Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center is made up of scientists and patient care providers who seek better understanding and treatment of all forms of diabetes. We are building an international coalition with diabetes researchers and clinicians from around the world, allowing all diabetes experts to join forces and seamlessly work together with one goal: to accelerate the progress of finding a cure.

Our new, cutting-edge clinic in the Domino’s Farms complex, allows us to offer better, more comprehensive and coordinated care for our patients. The clinic serves adults with diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, abnormalities of the thyroid, adrenal, or pituitary gland, or other hormone-related issues, as well as adult podiatry patients. Putting these services in one location makes it convenient for our patients to receive all of their necessary diagnostic tests, treatments and preventive care. It also makes it easier for patients to take part in clinical trials of new treatments, or to volunteer for studies that seek to better understand their disease.

In addition, we offer The Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center to meet the needs of investigators to support and strengthen our activities in research, training and outreach in the field of diabetes and related endocrinology and metabolism disorders. Funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1977, our center is one of only five in the U.S.

Likewise, The Brehm Center for Diabetes Research works to advance the development of new treatments and cure(s) of all forms of the disease, with a particular emphasis on type 1 diabetes.
